Job Summary
Mix and serve drinks and food to patrons, either directly or through wait staff. Duties include serving customers in restaurants and stores, as well as receiving clients or guests.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Open and close the restaurant
- Stock the bar with beer, wine, liquor, and related supplies such as ice, glassware, napkins, or straws
- Take beverage orders from serving staff or directly from patrons
- Check identification of customers to verify age requirements for alcohol purchase
- Mix ingredients such as liquor, soda, water, sugar, and bitters to prepare cocktails and other drinks
- Serve wine, liquor, and bottled or draft beer
- Collect payment for drinks served
- Attempt to limit problems and liability related to customers' excessive drinking by persuading customers to stop drinking, or ordering taxis or other transportation for intoxicated patrons
- Balance cash receipts, complete paperwork, and make payment drop into the cash drawer
- Clean bars, work areas, and tables; clean glasses, utensils, and bar equipment
- Perform other job duties as assigned
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, individuals must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability needed.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or
- 2 years related experience and/or training; or
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
Language Skills
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
- Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry
Reasoning Ability
- Excellent decision-making and analytical skills
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization
- Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Computer Skills
- Knowledge of Word Processing software
- Knowledge of Spreadsheet software
- Knowledge of Internet software
Other Requirements
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early and late shifts, weekends, and holidays
