Chief Engineer
Job Description
The H Hotel in Midland, Michigan is seeking a Chief Engineer to oversee the maintenance of all hotel and restaurant equipment and systems on site. Reporting to the General Manager, this role manages mechanical and electrical systems, pumps, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, locks, furniture, paints, wall coverings, tile and other components typically handled by hotel maintenance staff, with day-to-day operational decision-making authority. This on-site leadership position blends hands-on technical work with project planning and cross-department collaboration to keep facilities safe, functional and comfortable for guests. Location: Midland, Michigan, onsite at 111 W Main St, Midland, MI 48640.
Responsibilities
- Oversees the operation, maintenance and repair of essential plant equipment such as pumps, motors, boilers and chillers, among others.
- Manages electrical and refrigeration systems and related equipment, ensuring dependable operation and timely repairs.
- Performs painting of surfaces and equipment, plus minor wall covering repairs and light furniture touch-ups.
- Maintains hotel lighting and related systems to ensure optimal performance.
- Oversees plumbing infrastructure and related components throughout the property.
- Cares for appliances, equipment and the building's physical plant.
- Maintains guest room furnishings and equipment along with the building’s plant.
- Changes bulbs and fixtures, and handles small electronics such as televisions and radios as needed.
- Maintains lock and key security systems.
- Undertakes minor construction tasks as required.
- Inspects and repairs kitchen and restaurant equipment and furnishings as required.
- Plans, coordinates and schedules maintenance projects.
- Communicates upcoming projects with relevant departments.
- Researches and solicits proposals for capital projects.
- Manages purchasing and maintenance activities within the department budget.
- Assists with other related duties as assigned by the General Manager.
Requirements
- A college degree or trade school credential, plus five years of related hotel operations experience.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- High attention to detail.
- Computer skills are required; experience with hotel information systems is preferred.
- Construction experience is recommended but not required.
