Job Description

The Area Director of Engineering serves on-site in Houston, TX, guiding the hotel’s engineering division with accountability for administrative, financial, and operational duties that support safety and profitability. The role collaborates with senior and corporate leadership and ownership on capital expenditure initiatives and reports directly to the General Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consistently professional, friendly, and engaging service.
  • Maintain open communication with other departments and keep relevant teams informed of progress when issues arise.
  • Direct the day-to-day operations of the Maintenance department and ensure all standards are observed in both departments.
  • Supervise and train Engineering staff in customer service, empowerment, standard operating procedures, and loss prevention standards.
  • Develop, approve, and publish Engineering staff schedules in alignment with hotel standards.
  • Oversee ongoing maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance to boost efficiency, profitability and service levels.
  • Coordinate renovation and capital projects, managing outside contractors as required.
  • Prepare and manage the annual maintenance budget, monitor performance on a monthly basis, assume P&L responsibility for the department, and assist in preparing the capital plan.
  • Establish and refine a comprehensive preventive maintenance program for guest rooms and equipment, integrating the program into facilities management software to track work orders and scheduled maintenance needs.
  • Adhere to purchasing procedures for all inventory needs and maintain the required physical inventory in line with the maintenance program and unanticipated emergencies.
  • Ensure the hotel complies with government regulations related to building codes, health, fire and life safety programs.
  • Review ongoing service contracts to ensure superior performance and competitive pricing.
  • Monitor energy and water management programs to ensure cost effective utility use.
  • Actively participate in energy conservation and safety programs.
  • Balance operational demands with administrative duties and guest needs.
  • Adhere to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Follow all safety policies.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive facilities management experience in a hotel.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations, and general maintenance skills are required.
  • Heavy work requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds continuously to lift, move, or position objects.
  • Travel related to company business may be required.
  • Maintain a warm and friendly demeanor at all times.
  • Effective verbal and written communication with employees and guests in an attentive, courteous, and service oriented manner.
  • Ability to listen, understand, and clarify concerns raised by employees and guests.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize departmental functions to meet deadlines.
  • Approach all interactions with guests and staff in an attentive, courteous, and service oriented manner.
  • Maintain regular attendance in compliance with hotel standards, with scheduling varying to meet hotel needs.
  • Comply with hotel standards and regulations to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Focus on productivity, identify problem areas, and assist in implementing solutions.
  • Effectively handle problems, including anticipating, preventing, identifying, and solving as necessary.
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate complex information from multiple sources to achieve objectives.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information.
  • Flexible availability, as weekends and nights may be required when projects or repairs require the director of engineering presence.
