The Chief Engineer leads the hotel's physical plant, overseeing structural, mechanical, electrical and HVAC systems to support reliable operations and a consistent guest experience.
Overview
Maintain the entire hotel facility, including the building structure, all mechanical, electrical and HVAC systems, and related equipment while aligning with energy conservation and preventative maintenance programs. Ensure guest areas are well kept to preserve an attractive, functional property.
Responsibilities
- Conduct walk throughs and visual assessments to ensure safe and efficient operation of the hotel's structure and all mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems and related equipment.
- Verify routine maintenance is completed in public spaces, meeting rooms, ballrooms, outlets, back of the house, and grounds, and confirm repairs, replacements, and renovations to offices and employee work areas.
- Assist in hiring, training, supervising and disciplining department staff and other engineering staff such as painters, upholsterers and groundskeepers.
- Follow corporate purchasing policies and controls, including outside contractor bids, budgets and schedules, and observe safety procedures required by the company and OSHA.
- Maintain effective Energy Management and Preventive Maintenance programs and provide training to other departments on safe and efficient use of equipment and energy in the hotel.
Requirements
- Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the primary language used in the workplace.
- Must be able to read and write to facilitate communication.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are required.
- Most tasks are performed in a team environment with the employee acting as a team leader.
- Must possess basic computational ability and basic computer skills.
- Knowledge of computer accounting programs, math skills and budget analysis capabilities are required.
- Thorough knowledge of mechanical equipment such as chillers, boilers, water softeners, and refrigeration equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of plumbing and electrical systems, plus maintenance of records for power, water and fuel consumption.
- Experience with office procedures, ordering materials, securing bids, and knowledge of city codes, building laws, construction and blueprint reading.
Supportive Functions
- Supervise necessary repairs and maintenance throughout the hotel.
- Prepare technical data, bidding, project work, alterations and repairs for properties; basic knowledge of building codes.
- Provide training in fire prevention, environmental health and safety and engineering systems; participate in hotel operations meetings.
- Oversee daily and weekly payrolls and prepare departmental manpower schedules.
- Oversee water treatment programs.
- Attend morning walk throughs as required.
Physical Demands
- Most work is performed indoors with controlled temperatures; may be required to work in extreme environments such as freezers (-10 F) or hot kitchens (+110 F) for extended periods.
- Ability to stand and move with pace for up to 4 hours; ability to reach locations across the hotel in a timely manner.
- Capability to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to perform cleaning and maintenance tasks.
- Lift up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally; exposure to moving machinery, electrical hazards, scaffolding and high places.
- Exposure to fumes, dust, chemicals and other atmospheric conditions; oils and cutting fluids may be present.
- Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, listening and hearing, and visual acuity including near, color and depth perception.
- Must have manual dexterity to operate equipment and office devices.
Availability
The employer operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Typically the role is Monday through Friday with hours varying by business demand and may require weekend work or schedule changes as needed based on task assignments.
