Sous Chef

The Northern Hotel in Billings, Montana is seeking a versatile Sous Chef to strengthen a multi-outlet culinary team across its fine-dining restaurant, diner, and banquet or catering operations. In this onsite role, you will rotate based on business needs and support the Executive Chef in maintaining consistently high kitchen standards.

Role overview

• Assist the Executive Chef with daily kitchen operations for TEN, Bernie's Diner, and Banquets on a rotating basis, ensuring quality, efficiency, and safety.
• Oversee food preparation, plating, and presentation across all outlets to keep results consistent with Northern Hotel culinary standards.
• Support the Executive Chef in maintaining strong kitchen flow by expediting orders during peak service while ensuring timely, accurate delivery to guests and banquet clients.
• Handle service-day challenges with calm, effective problem-solving and quick adaptation to unexpected situations.

Inventory, sanitation, and quality control

• Manage kitchen inventory and control costs.
• Oversee ordering and receiving of food and supplies for all operations.
• Perform regular inspections of food quality and storage areas to confirm proper sanitation, safety, and hygiene standards are followed.

Requirements

• Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 40 pounds.
• Flexible availability for a varied schedule including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• 3-5 years of culinary experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership or Sous Chef role, ideally within a hotel or multi-outlet setting.
• Strong working knowledge of cooking techniques, kitchen equipment, and best practices for food preparation and presentation.
• Proven ability to manage, train, and motivate a diverse culinary team.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with staff, management, and vendors.
• Ability to multitask and perform well under pressure in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
• A culinary arts degree or relevant certification is preferred, and can be offset by demonstrated experience.

Work schedule and location

• Location: Billings, MT (onsite)
• Schedule: Full-time with flexibility for days, nights, weekends, and holidays

Compensation: USD 50,000 - 55,000 per year.
